Cashmere is known by a variety of names like cashmere fiber, cashmere wool, and cashmere yarn. In some cases, cashmere is also known as pashmina, and the two terms can be used interchangeably. The difference actually lies after harvesting the wool from the Capra Hircus or cashmere mountain goats. Cashmere is machine processed while pashmina is hand processed using traditional methods of yarn making. This means that the pashmina wool is slowly spun using a wooden spinner, and small clumps of fibers are turned one piece at a time.
Needless to say, pashmina fibers are more expensive than the machine processed cashmere, simply because it is more difficult to make.
Properly processed, this type of fiber usually has very fine but resilient texture. It is often considered warmer on the skin than conventional sheep wool, but is more lightweight to wear, softer on the skin and easier to maintain. All these attributes are what makes the cashmere and pashmina quite sought after.
Some of the usual cashmere & pashmina products include the conventional apparels made from 100% cashmere fibers like coats, baby jumpers, gloves, jackets, shawls, etc. Less conventional products include blankets, car seats covers, and rugs. These are pricey, to say the least. That is why fabric manufacturers are now also selling fabric blends like cotton cashmere, silk cashmere, and linen cashmere to other companies. This helps bring down the cost of cashmere & pashmina products. At the same time, it makes the blended fabric feel more luxurious to the touch but stronger in constitution. |
