Incense - Incense Holders - Burners
There has always been a long history of incense use all over the world. There are recorded accounts of incense burning in the East even before the famous dynasties have been established; that is about 2,000 to 3,000 years before the any of the civilizations in the West came to its full potential. The use of incense is still very much prevalent in modern times. Many cultures and religions still perform incense burning as a means of spiritual communion. However, the current trend seems to lean towards the use of these as fashionable home accessories.
As such, there has been an increase in the production of not just aromatic (or aromatherapy based) incense, but incense holders and incense burners as well. There are actually two methods to burning incense.
The most popular is through direct burning. Joss sticks, coils, cone incense, solid sticks and hand dipped incense are examples of direct burning methods. These are the so-called ready made or combustible incense. Although most of these are still used in more traditional means, fashionable incense holders designed specifically for the home are now readily available everywhere. Not all of these holders look like candle sticks, a good number of them come in all shapes and sizes, like boxes (made of bamboo, wood, or metal); small wooden platforms; sand bowls; pebble filled jars; and even lantern shaped ceiling ornaments.
The indirect burning method is not quite that far behind when it comes to popularity. In fact, some people rather favor the use of the non-combustible incense in their homes since they can add whatever fragrance they would want whenever. The only thing with the indirect burning method is that you need to add a separate heat source for the incense to burn. Burning charcoal is usually the favored choice as a heat source, and for this, a home owner would need special burners like censers, which are designed to withstand heat without conducting it to other surfaces.
