Kalachakra Mandalas Paintings

Kalachakra mandalas are one of the most intricate and complex of all mandala designs. The one feature that makes this piece of art work distinctive from all other mandala designs is that: the Kalachakra is required to have an intricate interpretation of all 722 deities housed in their own geometric structures. Each detailed structure, in turn, must correspond with a specific meaning in the long list of Buddhist language symbols.

Kalachakra mandalas are highly ornamental, but its attraction lies in how the creating artist can interpret all the necessary dogma of the Kalachakra text into a very limited space. Often, in sand mandala interpretations, a Kalachakra mandala can take weeks (or months) to complete. A painting with the same design has to have an artist with a painstaking eye for detail. Very, very careful hands are essential in depicting that much Buddhist religion symbols.

In the West, this type of design earns a high value for in both the aesthetic and spiritual fields. Because there are just too many Buddhist symbols and images being used in the Kalachakra doctrines, the translation of Buddhist symbols can also be just as numerous as well. The value of the artwork therefore lies in the skills of the artisans making the design for the Kalachakra mandalas. Some of these designs are subsequently preserved in Buddhist art and Tibetan Art.

The mandala is a one of the many Buddhist religious symbols that serves as both a ceremonial decoration and a spiritual tool for moral guidance. It also serves as a one of the more prominent Buddhist art symbols in the West, and one of the prominent Zen Buddhist symbols in the East.
