Vairochana Buddha
In Buddhism, Buddha who embodies enlightenment and awakening has five qualities that are represented by five Dhyani or Pancha Buddhas. One of these Dhyani Buddha Statues is the Vairochana Buddha.
Vairochana Buddha Statues like the other four which includes the Akshobya, Ratna Sambhav, Amitabha, and Amoghshidhi are all reverently displayed at the temples and shrines where Buddhists worship.
Considered as the center of all the qualities of the Buddha, the Vairochana Buddha Statues are often place inside the sanctum called stupa. He is considered the master of shrines and temples because he embodies all the qualities of the Buddha.
The Vairochana Buddha Statues are also sometimes called Vairocanas. They must never be displayed outside the sacred area but sometimes there are exemptions. Like in Nepal, there is one very significant stupa where the Vairochana Buddha Statue is displayed in between Akshobhya in the east and Ratna Sambhav in the south.
Since the Vairochana Buddha Statues are considered to be the combined qualities of Buddha, his color is white. He sits in a lotus position where his legs are crossed and in meditative posture. The statue’s two hands are in a preaching mode positioned against the chest with fingers close to each other.
The Vairochana Buddha Statues are symbols of the Buddha who was a teacher and a preacher. Two fierce lions on both sides guard him. The lions signify the loud roars and impact of the Buddha’s teachings.
Believers of the Vairochana Buddha Statues seek to have their ignorance transformed. They go to the Vairochana for wisdom on as they tackle Buddhahood or the Dharma that is the path to enlightenment.
