Akshobhya Buddha
Buddhism is the religion that revolves around the
teachings of Buddha, who was once a kind, compassionate and patient human but who worked hard to attain the enlightened life that is Buddhahood. He is to Buddhists, the greatest teacher and preacher who had five great qualities embodied in the
five Dhyani Buddhas. One of these Dhyani Buddhas is the Akshobhya Buddha.
In Nepal, the Akshobhya Buddha ranks second to the
Vairochana. Akshobhya is Sanskrit for the “immovable one” which says a lot about his virtues. In ancient times, there was a monk who wanted to practice the Dharma in the eastern part of the world. He made a vow not to give in to anger and not to bring malice to any being he meets. This made up his immovable quality and eventually turned out to be the Akshobya.
The Statues of Akshobhya signify the possible transformation of human anger by mirroring that human emotion with clarity of attitude and wisdom. Just like any mirrors reflecting the real thing, those who believe in the Akshobhya Buddha acquire the wisdom to see things clearly and without prejudice. This attitude is a great instrument in understanding others more especially when angered.
Seated at the east of stupas, the Akshobhya Buddha Statues are mounted on elephants. These elephants add to the unshaken, strong qualities that the Buddha has. His left hand rests on his lap while the right hand rests on his knee. With his right palm in inward, relaxed position, the fingertips touch the ground.
Akshobhya Buddha Statues exhibit this earth touching mudra or gesture to symbolize the Buddha’s commitment, dedication and confidence in achieving dharma and becoming awakened. Likened to earth being unwavering, firm and constant, the Akshobhya Buddha Statues are committed to enlightenment and are instrumental to terminate the human suffering.
