Men’s Buddhist Clothing
You might have noticed a sudden or not-so-sudden influx of Buddhist inspired clothing in the fashion shops these days. To be more specific, men Buddhist clothing - punk style is making waves with the younger crowd. However, fashion taken from traditional Tibet clothes is really nothing new, punk style or otherwise. New generations of designers have come up with their own modern versions of Tibetan clothing. The emerging punk style now is actually a creative corruption (or interpretation, as you will) of the more traditional and very conservative Buddhism clothes that are normally worn by those who practice monasticism in Tibet.
A great majority of these creative apparels are literally inspired by the draping and free flowing fabric that is commonly seen in a Buddhist monk’s robe. The prayer shawl is that one piece of textile that is most distinctive, and thereby most copied by modern day fashion designers. Dark, rich, blood red is the usual color of the monks’ clothes, as with toned-down deep burgundy coloration with as little ornamentation possible. However, fashion dictates a whole variety of colors; and so, the Buddhist inspired clothing - punk style often includes off beat colors like bright neon, printed fabrics and the required Gothic black.
Traditional Tibetan clothing also offers fashion designers the chance to interpret the men’s sleeveless shirt into something more appropriate to the modern world. Tibetan monks often wear sleeveless shirts for work or when they are apt to perform more strenuous activities. These shirts are usually very loose around the arm pits and tied only by strings around the waist. Modern day designers have taken the basic kimono-looking form, added a band collar, a single chest pocket, buttons (sometimes zippers), and given a whole new meaning to the words work shirt.
