Buddhist Clothing Accessories
It seems quite contradictory to point out that the popular fashion accessories we see now are actually Buddhist inspired clothing or something taken from the Tibetan Buddhist monastic way of life. And as we all know, traditional Buddhism clothes and its people are actually very austere. Yet, that very state of austerity has more than captured the interest of fashion designers from all over the world. Traditional monastic Tibet clothes, particularly monks’ clothes have somehow become part and parcel of fashion now, and makers of Buddhist clothing accessories are certainly staking their claim on its popularity.
The prayer shawl (or the zen or zentra) is one of the most prominent and distinctive fashion accessory that is definitely Buddhism inspired. Although the traditional prayer shawls are usually large pieces of fabrics draped over one shoulder, and that they reach floor length dimensions; modern day designers have fashioned the shawls into smaller pieces. The shawls now are still draped over one shoulder but they only reach around the wearer’s waist or hips. In some cases, the shawls are actually sewn with the shirt, or even printed on the shirt as aesthetic design - something that most monks’ clothes makers are not prone to do.
However, traditional monastic Tibetan clothes are not the only inspiration for Buddhist clothing accessories. Various Dalai Lamas have already become enduring icons of the age, making their face imprints on jewelries and other pieces of fashionable accessories like belt buckles, hats, caps, gloves, watches, pins and even neckties. The monks’ ideologies and teachings, sometimes written in Sanskrit or in English are also becoming typical designs seen in decorative handbags, scarves, and even suspender bands.
