The history records mention that the written material about Buddhist prayer wheels is as old as 400 AD. The meaning of Buddhist Prayer wheels is the continuous movement of wheel of Dharma. These wheels convey message of the Dharma that Buddha taught.
As practice followed, Buddhist Prayer wheels adopted very specific rules and regulations of praying. The rules guide the practitioners that the wheel must be spun in clockwise direction only because the mantras were written in this direction. It is also a practice to repeat the mantra before and after moving the Prayer wheel to incur the excellence. During the practice of moving the prayer wheels, the mantras should be repeated continuously and it is also essential to keep the mind under meditation.Tibetan practitioners believe that the place where Prayer wheels are installed is capable to bring peace of mind and tranquility in the world. This is the right place for meditation. As per their belief it is the place for generating great purity in mind and eradicating all kind of sins from heart and body. The most popular mantra used while meditating the prayer wheels is ‘Om Mani Padme Hum’ that invites sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings or the misfortune for others from the Lord.
Buddhist prayer wheels are designed in various forms. But there are seven types of wheels that are widely known. These are Mani Wheel, Water Wheel, Fire Wheel, Wind Wheel, Stationary Praying Wheel, Electric Dharma Wheel and Digital Prayer Wheel.
Mani Wheel is hand prayer wheel. It is circular body with metal or wood handle. The body of wheels is spin in direction of clockwise as mantra are written. Water Wheel is a large sized prayer wheel which is forced to turn with the help of flowing water. It is believed that that the water that has come in contact of wheel becomes pure. It is the water that is blessed by lord to purify the world. The Fire Wheel is rotated by some form of fire like lamp or electric. This works on the principal of ‘emission of light’. This emitted light brings purity whosoever come in its contact. The Wind Prayer Wheel is rotated by the force of wind and the wind that passes the wheel purify the environment and the people.
Stationary Prayer Wheels are made of metal, that are kept in same line. One can rotate these wheels in a row with his hands. The touching of these wheel believed to be equal to touching part of the body of Lord. ‘Electric Dharma Prayer Wheels’ are turned by the motor that is run by electricity. These electric wheel contain 100s and 100s copies singing mantras in different languages. The Electric wheel is believed to be more beneficial than Mani wheel since it contains complete preaching of Buddha Dharma. ‘Digital Prayer Wheels’ are the modern technology of praying the lord. These wheels are in the form of websites and internet. It is believed that electromagnetic waves that carry data, messages from one place to other, also carry purity and the spiritual blessing of lord in all directions. These waves carry blessing of lord without leaving any space unattended.
