The Dharmapalas (in Tibetan Chhoikyong) and protectors of the doctrine (Dharma). In this category a group of eight is especially notable; known as the eight terrible (Dag Chey), the origin of their worship is suppose to go back to Padmasambhawa who, when he conquered the malevolent gods he found in Tibet, spared those who promised to become protectors of the Buddhist doctrine. That most of them portrayed in ferocious forms is because it is their work to bring fear to evil spirits. Among them the following are the most prominent.
