Ekadasmukh - Buddhist Deity

Ekadasmukh means “Eleven heads" and there is a variant of this form called sitatpatra in which he is seated and with, two or twelve arms holds an umbrella. He is called also Samantamukha or the “all sided one “the god who looks in every direction to protect all creators. In this form he is known Ekadas Lokeshwor. Avalokiteswara” The compassionate one” descended into hell converted wicked, liberated them, and conducted them to Sukhawati, the paradise of his spiritual father Amitabha. The form with eleven heads is explained by the story that when Avalokiteswara looked down upon the many beings in need of deliverance in the hell of Yama. The god of death, his head broke into ten pieces out of his great compassion; these were put together by his spiritual father Amitabha. Amitabha caused each piece to bear a head, and placed the head on the body of his spiritual son. Avalokiteswara, in three (tiers) heads of three with the length head on top and his own image above them all. Thus, the “One looking lord” was endowed with twenty two eyes instead of two, so see all suffering and eleven brains instead of one to generate on the best means of saving mankind. The three tiers of head indicate that Avalokiteswara looks down on the three world, world of divine, world of live form and world of no form.
