Singing bowl commonly knows as Tibetan Singing bowl,
Himalayan bowl or cup gong is a musical instrument used in
Buddhist meditation and is a part of Tibetan culture since the time of the
Buddha Shakyamuni (560 - 480 B.C.). The tradition was brought into Tibet along
with the teachings of the Buddha, by the great tantric master Padmasambhava in
the 8th century A.D. Usually Tibetan singing bowls are played in temples,
monasteries and meditation halls by Buddhist monks in Tibet, Nepal, India,
China, Japan, and Korea. Today they are enjoyed around the world for deep
relaxation, stress reduction, holistic healing, Reiki, chakra balancing, sound
massage, sound therapy, and music. Many people consider the rich blend of
harmonic overtones which the bowls produce have a direct affect upon their
chakras.
Singing Bowls come from the magical Himalayas of Nepal, Tibet & India. We
find two types of Singing bowls Hand Beaten (hammered) singing bowls and
casting singing bowls. Hand beaten singing bowls have excellent sound quality
than Casting singing bowl and different sound from one another. Most antique
singing bowls are hand beaten made. The musical instrument is
made of a mixture of metal. New singing bowls are made with the mixture of
copper, tin and zinc and are exported widely from Nepal. Bronze singing bowls
are made today in Nepal, Japan and Korea but are not widely available.
The mixture of metals and when rubbed with a wooden mallet produce a complex and
beautiful sound full of wonderful harmonics and overtones. They can also be
played by slowly rubbing a wooden mallet around the rim of the bowl to produce
a continuous 'singing' sound. The sound produced by brass singing bowls and
bronze singing bowls are very different. Bronze made bowls produces good
quality sound however there are seven metal singing bowls which contains gold
and silver as well, it produces enchanting sound. Singing bowls come complete
with a wooden playing mallet for striking and rubbing to create your own melodies.
In Nepal Singing bowls can be found in a variety of shapes, sizes, designs and
colours. The bowls are often decorated and made with various religious themes
and symbols, like Tibetan mantra chant “Om Mani Padme Hum”, pictures of the
Buddha, Mandalas, Asta Mangal (eight auspicious good luck symbols) hand
carvings and the eyes of peace etc.
