This is a scepter used in ritual slaying it is used to kill an enemy by using it on his effigy. It is regarded as possessing magic power. In Tibetan it is called phurbu, an essential ritual artefact to the sacred mask-dance. It is regarded as a powerful weapon that keeps diseases and evil spirits at bay and combats the enemies of The Law. It controls demonic forces, nails them down and places them under the power of the Doctrine or Dharma. It symbolizes the penetration or breaking through of insight. In ritual worship along with the bell, the thunderbolt scepter is regarded as a token of stability of method. The holder of a vajra scepter is known as the ‘Dorje -Tzang’.
